Looking out past next season…waaaaaaaaaaaay out to 2025, what will we be wearing? Print-on-demand clothing? Recycled vintage? Smart fibers? The Forum for the Future and Levi’s collaborated on FASHION FUTURES, a project designed to find answers, and they came up with four feasible scenarios. Here is #1:

#1. SLOW IS BEAUTIFUL

The drastic changes in climate have created, amongst other things, a new world order which recognizes we’re all in this sinking ship together. Along with political cooperation and global trade, our health & well-being is a top priority. To monitor our internal state of affairs, we wear clothing that is “smart”. Far fewer items fill our closets, but what does tends to be of high quality; when we do splurge on cheaper, trend-driven clothes, retailers tempt us to open our wallets based on how sustainable we perceive a fashion item to be. Instead of trendy, disposable designs, vintage and second-hand is increasingly popular. Japan, in particular, specializes in re-manufacturing the world’s used garments.

To try & answer these questions, Levi Strauss & Co. and sustainability experts Forum for the Future teamed up on FASHION FUTURES - a collaboration of fashion experts from every area of the biz, including manufacturing, design and retail, as well as universities, trade unions and NGOs. The mission? To think-through possible scenarios for the future of fashion, starting with the raw materials and following them all the way up the chain to use & final disposal.

Be ready to explain to your Glamorous Drug Addict that the storm is really bad and that even though it looks like just a little rain, their life will be upended for a significant amount of time. Most Glamorous Drug Addicts usually don’t pay attention to these sort of potentially cataclysmic events unless a tree falls on top of them. And, yes, they probably should have closed their windows before they left their apartment, but, no, it’s probably not worth driving over the bridge to shut them because most of the other vehicles in the East Village appear to be underwater. Wait for them to process this information and brace for the temporary stress it has caused.

They will sleep in your bed for extremely long hours and appear dead. Let them sleep. They are much better when they sleep. Just check in every hour to make sure they are not dead because you would hate to burden the city’s overworked Emergency Workers with the task of removing a dead Glamorous Drug Addict. Wake them periodically to pour water down their throats and put Neosporin on any open burn wounds they may have neglected.

Create some space for the Glamorous Drug Addict to be alone so they can do work or spend quiet time thinking about themselves like they’re used to. It’s important. Otherwise, expect them to make you feel like a prisoner in your own home.

Just some helpful tips should you happen to have to host a Glamorous Drug Addict during a storm, hurricane or other cataclysmic event.

With so many people traipsing through NYC’s Grand Central Station every day of the week, strange sights become common. But not the recent twice-daily performance involving 60 Alvin Ailey dancers clad in oversize, vibrantly-colored shaggy raffia horse suits - one in the head & forelegs, the other bent over at a right angle in the animal’s belly & hind legs. Artist Nick Cave recently staged “Heard NY”, inspired by the human traffic that courses through the bustling location each day. “In the main terminal of Grand Central, it’s a dance in itself, especially if you’re standing up above, looking down,” explains Cave, whose day job is director of the graduate fashion program at Chicago’s Art Institute & whose shaggy “Soundsuits” bring to mind a flood of seemingly-conflicting emotions, from the tribal, to the precise (Haute Couture), to the modernist/abstract to the childlike - as if Dr. Seuss and Maurice Sendak had collaborated with muppeteer Jim Henson. “It’s an interesting network, an interesting dance, an interesting movement piece within itself. I find that to be very poetic.” (The poetry of dance & animals immediately brought to mind the fact that the mythology & veneration of the honey bee is built in large part on the fact that they are one of the only species to communicate with their fellow bees by dancing.) “There was a petulant tossing of heads, pawing of the ground, prancing, trotting, and even some inter-horse nuzzling,” writes one breathless reviewer of Cave’s mesmerizing equine-inspired spectacle. “All the while, a gentle swishing, whispering noise, the sound of a breeze sweeping through tall grasses, emanated from the suits. Then the drumming grew livelier, and heads and butts sprang apart, shimmying, harrumphing, and flailing in what resembled a riotous ritual dance. The wind in the willows became a tornado.” (Harrumphing…20+ flair points! Give the governor a harrumph!….20+ flair-points to you if you know which epic classic this is from.)

The SYMBOLISM OF THE HORSE in myth is generally tied to emotion: literally in the case of Neptune’s trident; as an omen of war for those venerating the god Mars; as life & death with Gemini; and in the Grimm fairytales, as endowed with powers of divination and tasked with giving their masters’ timely warnings. Carl Jung felt that it also expressed and gave form to the intuitive “mother” within.

When horses prance into dreams, they tend to represent whatever makes you thrive (your inner driving force) and, to a lesser degree, the shifting balance between the part of you that has succumbed to being tamed in some way and the part that is wild, operating on instinct, emotion & passion.

When Roman Emperor Augustus queried a centenarian how he managed to live so long, the man was said to reply: “Oil without and honey within.” Similarly, Greek mathematician Pythagoras (6th C. BC) attributed his extended lifespan to all the honey he ate regularly. According to legend, the sea god Glaucus was buried in a jar of honey, bringing him back to life - which is probably why Alexander the Great requested that as part of his burial preparations, he be wrapped in honey.

Our paleo ancestors apparently hunted & gathered more than just steak & leafy greens. Ethnographic data, paleolithic rock art and other evidence shows that early hominins ate honey and bee larvae, providing them with a significant source of energy - key for developing those big brains…and the main reason why you’re here today and reading this. “Humans have an ancient and intimate relationship with honey bees — from the development of beekeeping in prehistoric times up to the recent sequencing of the honey bee genome. Yet, the intimacies of bee sexuality remained obscure and contentious until relatively recently. The epidemic of collapsing bee colonies, to the tune of a million a year, is threatening the food supply. At least 30% if not more of what we consume is a result of bees busy pollinating. And it turns out, the blame could rest with a common class of pesticides. Neonicotinoids or “neonics” are produced primarily by German chemical giant Bayer & commonly show up in home gardening products; they also coat a mindboggling 142 million acres of corn, wheat, soy and cotton seeds. Once the neonics are absorbed by the plants, the pollen and nectar become poisonous to the bees’ nervous systems and impair their homing ability. The result? They’re not able to return to the hive. But wait - there’s more. As monoculture agriculture has replaced the diversity grown on small farms, the pollinators no longer get the variety they need in their food; plus, planting GMO crops has destroyed bee habitats and weakened bees’ immune systems.

To keep your mind young, be like a bee. When adult honeybees took on responsibilities usually handled by younger bees (removed from the hive by the researchers for this experiment) including caring for baby bees, the older bees experienced reverse brain aging. Taking on fresh challenges that maintain and stretch “plasticity” in your brain can limit the negative effects of aging.

Smoking weed keeps you young(er). The active chemical components, called cannabinoids, dampen inflammation in the brain - a potential cause of many degenerative brain diseases - and encourage new neural pathways to grow. Aging hippies who like their herb are apparently better at staving off dementia & Alzheimer’s…so roll up a fattie & make ours a Camberwell Carrot, please.

Alzheimer’s can be detected earlier than originally thought. A study of a large Columbian family genetically predisposed to the disease tended to show symptoms around the age of 45, although some extended family members showed changes as early as 18.

Dementia may be a type of diabetes. Diabetes (Type 2) is linked to problems with insulin signaling and Type 2 diabetics are twice as likely as others to develop Alzheimer’s. The brains of elderly Alzheimer’s patients often have far fewer insulin receptors - as in 80% lower. So researchers are speculating that Alzheimer’s may in fact be a type of diabetes, dubbed “Type 3”.

Being cultured is good for your brain. An interesting study found that people who had learned to play a musical instrument as a child maintained more of their brain function as they aged, even outperforming non-musical adults in tests of their memory and cognitive ability. Aging adults who participate in dance programs apparently reduce the development of dementia by up to 75%.

SharpBrains, a market research firm which tracks innovations in brain health, forecasts the market for digital brain health to grow exponentially to between $4 and $10 billion by 2020, with $6 billion being the most likely scenario.

When psychiatrists in London’s Camberwell quarter began analyzing decades worth of data which the local health authorities began collecting in 1965 - keeping case records for everyone diagnosed with any psychiatric conditions - the shrinks uncovered something surprising. The incidence of schizophrenia had more or less doubled, from around 11 per 100,000 inhabitants per year in 1965 to 23 per 100,000 in 1997 — a period when there was no such rise in the general population. They surmised it might have to do with how many more people are now living in cities (up from 1/3 of the world’s population to half) - and the fact that cities are Stress Central. And they were right. Apparently, if you currently live in a city, your emotion-processing area, the amygdala, works overtime as compared with non city’ites; even more interesting, if you were raised in a city, regardless of where you live now, the brain-part which controls the amygdala & processing of negative emotions, the cingulate cortex, is much more responsive. And overresponsiveness to stress - stemming from childhood “nuture” conditions - could be driving adult psychiatric conditions, like schizophrenia.

So it’s small wonder people are in search of a haven, a respite, a low(er) stress safety zone: a social pattern recently discussed by The Color Association of the United State is the trend OASIS. And there’s a growing body of research to back up the notion that spending quality time with Mother Nature means better mental health and less stress.

Eating comfort food is also a fun way to deal - and what better than yummy earth cupcakes, complete with cute heart made from delish red frosting?

And our obsession with fanciful sweet treats - including the recent cupcake-mania to our current love affair with yumminess like Laduree macarons - was a trend kicked off by the Sofia Coppola movie about Marie Antoinette. The scene that everyone remembers of course: I Want Candy. “A color palette with bright, light, pastels is utilized, and the range of colors goes from very pale and soft to more shocking, creating a vast pastel bubble surrounding Marie Antoinette,” observes one cultural scholar abut the film in the journal Culture Unbound (“Costume Cinema and Materiality: Telling the Story of Marie Antoinette through Dress” by Therese Andersson, Volume 3, 2011). “Allusions to macarons, pastries and sweets occur frequently throughout the film,” as court gossips compare the doomed queen to “a little piece of cake.”

“Beauty and good eating are the same thing,” opines South Tyrolean chef Executive chef Roland Trettl of the Michelin-starred Ikarus restaurant in Salzberg. He created a project inspired by clothing and accessories - all of which are 100% edible & adds: “People who take care in the way they dress usually eat well, too. It has to do with style and taste.”

Parisian mega-maison of mode Christian Dior recently made the fourth floor of Harrod’s the place to be with an exhibition of fab couture frockage worn by the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Diana, Princess of Wales & current face Natalie Portman - accompanied by its own pop-up tea salon! Richly-upholstered gray chairs, white linen tablecloths & bunches of pink roses on the tables evoke Monsieur Dior’s love of 18th-century decor. The menu evokes our undying love of fabulous eats, from the lobster rolls to the egg-truffle sandwiches, tarte au citron, salted toffee chocolate tart, mini madeleines plus Champagne and a fine tea created especially for Dior by Harrods own teamakers.
